National Night Out was introduced by the Town Watch Association in 1984 to draw awareness at the community level about the importance of crime prevention. This national crime prevention event strengthens neighborhood relations and police/community relations.
Longview participated in National Night Out consistently from 1997 until 2008 when Longview, and other Texas communities, began a statewide movement to participate in Texans Against Crime. Of the 11 consecutive years that Longview participated in National Night Out, the city won 10 annual Outstanding Participation Awards from Town Watch Association. On average, Longview residents hosted 84 parties each year with 4,500 participants attending.
