In 2011, Longview received the distinguished award of “100 Best Communities for Young People” by America’s Promise Alliance. The Alliance was founded by General Colin Powell and his wife, Alma, to improve the lives of children through the America’s Promise Alliance. The selection committee began with over 300 applications, and Longview was in the final selection of the 100 chosen communities. America’s Promise looked at areas across the city that pertained to providing the Alliance’s Five Promises to young people. The Five Promises are: Caring Adults; Safe Places; A Healthy Start; Effective Education; and Opportunities to Help Others.
Through the application and selection, Partners in Prevention’s Mentoring Program, Youth Action Committee, and Adopt A School Partnership were highlighted. Additionally, other programs and initiatives across Longview in the fields of education, health, and youth serving organizations helped to secure is special award.
